Home maintenance tips from The Mortgage Girls

Keeping your home maintained in tip top shape can prevent issues down the track, preserving its value for decades to come. Your home is your biggest investment and if you take care of it, you will reap the rewards later.

Home maintenance is ongoing. That’s one of the joys of owning your own home, that there’s always something to do. But where do you start?

To help keep track of your maintenance we recommend splitting your upkeep into seasons. Having a list will help you identify which maintenance items hold priority over other items. Check out The Mortgage Girls seasonal maintenance tips below.

Summer

Summer

Got to love summer! A chance to get out, enjoy the sunshine and focus on the exterior of your home!

Add these maintenance tips & ideas to your summer schedule.

  • Wash your windows both inside and out. It's amazing how dirty windows can get, especially if you have paws or tiny hands touching them!
  • Inspect your house exterior for loose or rotted cladding. Pressure wash siding or brick. This will help get rid of any dust, dirt, tree sap, bird droppings, etc. Keeping an eye on these items can help ensure you future proof your home and catch any wear and tear early to keep on top of it.
  • Repair and repaint any chipped, cracking or faded exterior paint. Besides improving your home’s curb appeal, it will also help protect it from the elements.
  • Have your heating source/system's annual service completed to help extend its life and improve efficiency.
  • Clear and clean your gutters and down spouting to ensure there are no blockages.
  • Water blast and reseal your deck. This will help prevent any wood from splitting, fraying or cracking.
  • Refill cracks on cement walkway or driveway. Concrete is strong, but it can be easily damaged by standing water and freezing water that seeps in through the cracks.
  • Inspect outdoor play equipment. Reinforce, tighten and re-stain, reseal or repaint as needed.
  • Inspect fencing. Reinforce, re-stain, reseal or repaint as needed.
  • Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct. Without some maintenance, clogged lint and dust in your dryer vents could cause a house fire.
  • Check brick tuckpointing. Also, inspect the foundation for cracks or leaks. Foundation cracks can create an entry point for groundwater, insects and radon gas.
  • Prune trees and shrubs. Tidy up any hedging.
  • Visually check the outside of your home including your roof, walls and foundations. Look for gaps, cracks, moss, mould or damage. If you notice anything talk to a specialist to discuss the best course of action to repair or replace.
  • When checking your roof, inspect other such as a chimney, solar panels, tv aerial & or dish at the same time for any wear/tear or upkeep requirements.
