The Mortgage Girls

Almost Mortgage-Ready?

Getting a home loan can feel out of reach if you’ve been told you don’t quite meet the bank’s criteria. But a “not yet” doesn’t always mean “never”.
In a recent interview with NZ Adviser, our Head Adviser and Founder, Elyce Peters, shared some practical insights into helping buyers get into a stronger position to secure a home loan.
A few things that could help move you forward:
💳 Review your debt. Credit card limits, Buy Now Pay Later accounts and personal loans can all affect your borrowing capacity. The right changes could make a difference.
💰 Look at the bigger picture. Sometimes it’s about having a larger deposit. Other times, reducing debt, adjusting your purchase budget or exploring different lenders could be more helpful.
📊 Test your future budget. Try putting aside the difference between your current rent and your estimated mortgage repayments. It can help you see what’s manageable while building your savings.
🤝 Get advice before giving up. Different lenders have different policies, so a decline from one bank doesn’t automatically mean every option is off the table.
As Elyce explains:
“The important thing is that we’re not just getting an approval for the sake of getting an approval. It still has to be the right option for that client.”
The goal isn’t simply to get a home loan. It’s to find a pathway to home ownership that works for YOU and your financial future.
Not quite ready to buy? That’s okay 👌 A clear plan and the right advice can help you understand what needs to change and what steps to take next. 🏡
